. I think the railroad workers are trained to uncouple cars of trains that are not moving or at least moving at very low rates of speed. But the dropping at a rate of more than 100 mph is impossible. A railway worker could be killed or maimed in this groped. And even if the coupling was successful, that does not mean that the front of the train would arrive a screeching halt, especially if the lead is the portion of the diesel engine.
A worker can disconnect at any speed, if you can ease the strain on coupler, not a danger. There are release levers available on the steps of the locomotive. But because if you're going too fast for safety, you want to release in order to go even faster?
