Can I use Matchlight charcoal from last season?
The bag was stored indoors and rolled closed, but the briquettes will not light.
You can try, but it will be a struggle!
I’ve had two or three cook-outs ruined because of stale charcoal. Charcoal is one of the most absorbant substances on earth, and it will become so wet, just from absorption, that it won’t light. That juice that they put on the match-light is a volatile fluid, so it evaporates pretty quickly!
A rule that I learned the hard way (OK, it took twice to learn it!) is to never, ever try to use last year’s charcoal. It might work to sustain a fire that’s going strong, but for the most part – when in doubt, throw it out!
